Very tiny white then yellow shedding - flying insect with split tail? - Procloeon nelsoni - Male
Bakersfield, Kern County, California, USA
August 12, 2011
Size: 1/8" wide by 1/2" long
I noticed these insects on my door a few days ago and they were all white in color. Today I noticed some of them were yellow. After close observation, I realized the yellow ones were moving and the white ones were not. It appears to me that the white bugs are actually skin shedded off the new yellow insects! I will post a few more pictures of the skin as well. Can you please help me identify this very tiny little insect?

Procleon nelsoni
Hi Kristi-

I (now) believe this male imago to be Procleon nelsoni.

This mayfly male imago is most likely Diphetor hageni.

Definitely a Mayfly. They're unique among insects in having a winged pre-adult stage (called a sub-imago- the technical term for an adult is "imago").

I moved it to Ephemeroptera for expert attention, but some- or perhaps all- are likely to end up frassed. Still, the size and the location may help narrow it down, and there are lots of interesting local species all over the place- so this image, at least, may be worth keeping.
