This is a view of the left extended wing and open elytron of the subject beetle. The image was taken from the left side of the beetle, with the camera angle adjusted to view the outer half of the downward extended left wing membrane at a normal angle. It was taken at higher resolution than the full body dorsal view, so one can now see that the membrane has short setae-like spikes on its dorsal surface. The long main wing fibers, meanwhile, appear to be deeply rooted within the membrane.

This image is a CombineZP processed stack of 325 images with a 0.9 micron step taken with a Nikon BD Plan 20X 0.4NA 210 mm tube microscope objective + extension tube adapter + Nikon D300 camera. The objective's outer case was removed and replaced with a sheet of translucent material backlighted by a flash array.
