Krautwurms Fritillary? - Speyeria cybele - female

Krautwurms Fritillary? - Speyeria cybele - Female
Dunning Lake, Itasca County, Minnesota, USA
August 11, 2011
The dark edge of the wing and the row of white dots make me think this is a Krautwurms Fritillary (a subspecies of Great-Spangled Fritillary). Does that seem right?

all of the individuals of the species in your area
would belong in the same subspecies, but I still have doubts as to whether ssp. krautwurmi is supposed to even be in your area. However, these really do look like it, so I'm going to "very tentatively" call them that.

You are also far enough west and north to be getting close to the subspecies "pseudocarpenteri", which can be similar in appearance. The various subspecies all run together where they meet one another, and there is no nice neat line between most of them. This I would think is probably especially true anywhere east of the Great Plains, where the habitat and populations of the species are pretty much continuous with no significant geographic interruptions.

Moved from Butterflies (excluding skippers).
