Female Pseudomasaris on Phacelia Mutabilis - Pseudomasaris zonalis - SFSU Sierra Nevada Field Campus, just east of Bassetts, Sierra County, California, USA July 13, 2011
Nectaring on flowers of Phacelia mutabilis. Nectar is used as a source of food energy for the adult, and as an ingredient for the food mass she'll provision her nest with for her larval offspring. When water sources are not available, nectar can also be used as a wetting agent for sand & soil used for constructing the nest...but there was plenty of water available at this site.
