Bombus occidentalis? - Bombus occidentalis - male

Bombus occidentalis? - Bombus occidentalis - Male
along Clear Creek north of Idaho Springs, Clear Creek County, Colorado, USA
August 14, 2011
Size: abt 15 mm
I hope this is a Western Bumble Bee. We found a robust population of them foraging on White Sweet Clover (Melilotus alba) next to the river. It was quite an exciting discovery as I had only observed a single individual at other locations before. For anyone who is interested, Bombus occidentalis is in decline, and sightings should be reported to the Bumble Bee Conservation folks at the Xerces Society.
