A pretty big wasp with an unusual head. You can't really see the gold face in the first view, but check out the others.

Thanks, John, I think you are right!
Based on the images on the guide, and the large size. Also, this wasp provisions its cells with long-horned orthopterans which this area is crawling with. I don't think I will move them to the guide page since there are so many good images. I will let it slip off into Frass, unless someone sees something special that makes the images worth saving.

Just the same, the wasp is new to me, and I am very grateful for your identification of this large, flashy, interesting species!
