2294.99 - Dichomeris siren - Dichomeris siren
Bowie, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA
June 6, 2006
Size: ~ 4mm overall length
The following is from Hodges' 1986 MONA Fascicle 7.1; p.64, Pl. 4(9)

Holotype from Henson Creek, Oxon Hill, Prince George's County MD, 7 August 1978 (D.R. Davis, USNM). Also taken at same locality 7 July, 8 and 17 September. Also known from East River CT (1911 specimen), Ocquecoc Lake MI, Essex Co. Park NJ, Bull Run Park VA (20 May). Wing length 3.1-3.8mm, this is the smallest species of Dichomeris in North America.

I find it interesting that the CT specimen languished somewhere for 75 years before receiving a name. In 15 years of intensive collecting throughout MD, John Glaser and the late Tippy Stevenson and Doug Ferguson did not encounter the moth. Oxon Hill is about 20 miles from my yard. As far as I know this is just the second known locality for the moth in Maryland. Unfortunately I was not aware of this at the time I photographed and released it. I would have liked to add this to SangMi Lee's collection at the Mississippi Entomological Museum.
