Came across this bug on path at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands Preserve.

Maybe Both
It is one of the hairy tenebrionid beetles but it does seem like some dust may have gotten between the hairs--if not, it certainly matches the color of the soil.

Thanks for your reply. I did a bit more research and I've concluded my photo is of an Eleodes (Cratidus) Osculans...that is, a Wooly Darkling Beetle.
