Gelis from hardwood swamp - Olixon melinsula

Gelis from hardwood swamp - Olixon melinsula
Honey Island Swamp, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, USA
August 3, 2011
Size: 4.2 mm
Interesting ant mimic. Wouldn't have grabbed it, except its foraging behavior was a little too speedy and frantic even for an ant, so it caught my attention. The wings aren't quite vestigial, but certainly not long enough for flight. It did flicker the wings while I was observing it, which is the only way I noticed them at first.

If any interested party suggests a more diagnostic set of photos I can take (tarsi, mouthparts, whatever), I'll try to do so.

In my quick browse-around on google, I was unable to find any reference to Olixon species other than banksii. So I'm putting these here until I find out differently.
