Hopper on Common Milkweed - Agallia quadripunctata

Hopper on Common Milkweed - Agallia quadripunctata
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
June 8, 2006
Genus Agallia, or maybe Agalliopsis with that ridge or discontinuity where head meets pronotum?

Hard to photograph because he loved the "squirreling" trick of going to the opposite side of the trunk from where I was. Cicadellidae seem to love doing that.

Anti-"squirreling" technique
I've noticed the same with Glassy-winged Sharpshooters. My method is to reach behind the stem with my free hand (not too close, or it flies away!).

It invariably forgets about me and moves around to escape the hand- right into camera range.

Me too
I do that too, and did with this photo. Boy, you have to be fast, or within a split second after withdrawing your hand the fellow has moved back to the other side. I suppose if you want an "insurance shot" you should just go ahead and take one with your hand visible in the picture!

Andy, thanks for the ID on this one.

Agallia quadripunctata
A common species in weedy areas and agricultural fields. Agalliopsis tend to favor the edges of woodlands.

...
On this one the tibial spines are quite evident.
