Spider Wasp

Spider Wasp
San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, USA
August 19, 2011
Dragged the spider into a hole in the ground. Genus Sphex?

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Not digger wasp.
This is a spider wasp, family Pompilidae. I recognize it from the anatomy, but also because it has a paralyzed spider with it! No species of Sphex hunts spiders. Actually, the only sphecids that do are the mud daubers.
