Unfamiliar larva

Size: ~4 mm
I don't recognize this larva. It's too light for Cycloneda and the other common garden genera. It's too big (and the wrong shape) for Psyllobora. Found in a container of mixed leaves, thinned seedlings, etc., afternoon. Very active, wouldn't stop walking.

Cycloneda was my first thought
Propylea usually has a pale head with a dark border, and Propylea often has hourglass-shaped white markings. It doesn't really strike me as that.

Despite that this is an interesting looking larva...would love to know what it became.

possibly Propylea 14-punctata
Its currently-known range doesn't include California, but it's a biocontrol import and hence could turn up anywhere as a result of local releases. Do you have any more photos, especially of the rear end? P. 14-punctata larvae have a small terminal point on the last abdominal section that is diagnostic.

That's all I got.

I haven't seen any adults with squarish spots.

Biocontrol? Guide page says introduced accidentally; you may want to correct this.
