Strange Sand Wasp? - Pygodasis quadrimaculata - Male

Size: 25 mm.
I found this in an open field with tall grass. There were a lot of other species of wasps flying around the same area. At first, I thought that it was a cicadia killer, but it doesn't look quite right for that. It has a 1 1/2 inch wingspan.

Scoliid, maybe?
There are some similar specimens in Campsomeris:



However, that's not an ID--just a possibility to consider while waiting for an expert opinion. :)
