Fantastic and Beautiful Creature!!
But it wouldn't need a proboscis like that to feed on shallow flowers of Eriogonums. Did you happen to notice them visiting any flowers with deeper corollas?

I sure hope the local hominids act wisely, and don't drive this treasure to extinction.

No, I only saw a few of these guys, and they were not feeding -- only perched on Eriogonum or Heterotheca.
