Unknown Datana - Datana major

Unknown Datana - Datana major
Cumberland County, Tennessee, USA
August 24, 2011
Maybe Major Datana - Datana major, however it is black and white, not black and yellow.
Found on and eating bluebery.

Looks like D. major ...
... with emphasis on "looks like." Datana cats can be tricky. The only sure way I know for visual ID is if the cat, the moth and the food source all match descriptions. Some D. major cats are black and yellow, but you will notice the yellow patterns look like the white patterns. Maybe the food source has something to do with it, I don't know.

I've read D. majors have been known to eat blueberry, though mine delight in trashing my azaleas. Hope this help at least peak your interest in these caterpillars.
