Anartia jatrophae - male

Anartia jatrophae - Male
Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, USA
August 27, 2011
Found this morning flitting around in a flower garden (though he's sitting on a weedy Solanum here. Didn't get a good shot with the wings open (even though that's how he mostly was perching). He's a tad beat up (not too badly, but a piece is missing from the hind wing on the other side) and his palpi are missing. Very pugnacious and territorial, but probably a long way from "home".

It strays north
Kaufman Field Guide to Butterflies states it, "strays northward, rarely as far as Nebraska, New Mexico, ..."
