Never overlook the obvious
A book about ten feet from my elbow ID'ed the toe biter and confirmed that the male is indeed the egg carrier. (

I have no idea
My thought that it's a toebiter is from something someone mentioned on a hike, relating to size and location of the critter. I know nothing of these guys, and attempts to ID from photos failed me.
