Size: 1.5 cm
There are 2 orange eye spots. 1 on each side.The rest of him is black. There were lots in my garden today. They ranged from 1/2 inch to 1 inch.

Or maybe a male mutillid?
Not necessarily the illustrated species, of course. Wait to see what the experts have to say.
Incidentally, I took the liberty of cropping your pic. Only you and the editors can see the full-size image. Everyone else is left looking at at little bug in a big background. :)
