Redwood Butterfly? - Polygonia satyrus

Redwood Butterfly? - Polygonia satyrus
Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
August 30, 2011
This matches the description of what the locals call a "Redwood Butterfly." What kind of butterfly is it? The head seems to have a forward pointing sort of projection.

Likely a Question Mark
Question mark butterfly - Polygonia interrogationis

It looks very much like one...but...
I don't see that any have been submitted from the western united states. I will have to do some checking but I must say your ID looks pretty good to me.

Polygonia satyrus - Satyr Comma!
I think I have it narrowed down to Polygonia satyrus - Satyr Comma, a west coast cousin of the Question mark. Thanks for pointing me to the correct genus!
