Rove beetle
This beetle is in family Staphylinidae. The staphylinids are the second largest family of beetles, with about 46,000 species world wide. They're predators, and often found around decaying wood. Note the really short front wings - with the filiform antennae, diagnostic for this group. Because of their short front wings, they're good at moving fast and wriggling around obstacles. It's an old group of beetles. Fossils date back to the Triassic, about 200 million years ago.
