Phrynotettix robustus - Indio Mountains Research Station, Hudspeth County, Texas, USA June 15, 2005 Size: around 5 cm
This is an adult female Robust toad lubber, Phrynotettix robustus, very well camouflaged amongst the pebbles. They are common in this area, but farther to the west share territory with P. tshivavensis which can be differentiated by it's dark inner hind femor. I did a diet study on some pallid bats in the area, and on one night found the pronotums and hind legs from roughly 50 of these lubbers under the bats' night roost.
