Neolipoptena ferrisi?? - Lipoptena

Neolipoptena ferrisi?? - Lipoptena
Los Olivos, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
September 2, 2011
Size: 3mm
This louse fly landed on my arm while hiking at Sedgwick Reserve in the Santa Ynez Valley. It appears to be a deer ked, one of two California species. I am guessing Neolipoptena ferrisi, does anyone know this genus? What are the structures on the thorax between front and middle legs? The neck seems very vulnerable, being non-chitinous.
