With regards to color and pattern, this species is perhaps the most variable member of the Genus Tibicen.

However, the dark reddish brown legs, black pronotal collar and nearly choc-black eyes are among the better diagnostic traits (eyes may rarely be dark greenish or brownish in tenerals or young adults).
