Check if its a male
You can check genitalia against a series of 10 papers written by R.W. Dawson in the J. NY. Ent. Soc. from 1919 to 1967. I'm not sure if there is a regional key using external characters for your area.

There are quite a few western species, especially thru California. Species may be more limited further north in the WA/BC area.

Thanks Brad
will check the literature; is there a way to sex these guys by external characters or are these one of those where I have to just "pull the tail and see" ? :)

Not sure
I don't know of any reliable external characters to sex these, though females tend to be larger. I always "pull the tail and see".
