Mating Thread-waisted Wasps - Eremnophila aureonotata

Mating Thread-waisted Wasps - Eremnophila aureonotata
Washington, Beaufort County, North Carolina, USA
September 11, 2005
Originaly when I took this photo I thought they were bald faced wasps, but I know only enough about bugs to be truly dangerous. Please help me give my 7 year old an accurate identification. Thank You.

Eremnophila aureonotata
YEs this is a specid wasp, Eremnophila aureonotata, they are harmless and would not sting. Beautiful and graceful wasps! They hunt caterpillars to provide their larvae with food and they are great in finding their nest again, which is just a single chamber in loose soil.
Cheers
Martin

Looks Sphecid
And may be Eremnophila.
