Cimbicidae: Cimbex americana (larva)? - Cimbex americanus

Cimbicidae: Cimbex americana (larva)? - Cimbex americanus
Turtle River State Park, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
September 5, 2011
Size: Length ~ 3.5 cm
This specimen may be an example of the Elm Sawfly larva. It was found on a sunlit, terminal, low-hanging branch of a Basswood Tree in a Basswood-Elm-Cottonwood Forest. I'll show three images, one of which shows the fluids secreted when handled. Surprisingly, this specimen was able to squirt fluids laterally, in a water pistol sort of way, up to 5-6 cm! An amazing creature.
