Orange eyes - Phyllodesma americana

Orange eyes - Phyllodesma americana
Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada
September 24, 2010
Size: 4-5 cm
I only have the one photo. I was bushwacking through mostly coniferous woods in the pouring rain when I noticed this guy on my arm. I would not have normally pulled out my camera under these conditions, but the bright orange caught my eye. When I tried to get him off it took a while, this guy had a GRIP.

Thanks
Those are the same orange eyes, but it's much cuter when dry!

his eyes are on his head..
those are trim..hahahahaha they are the funniest catepillars..if you had met him when he wasn't half drowned..they flip and flop wildly..it made me laugh right out loud when i first met one

But they aren't orange!
If a moth can have eyes on its wings, a caterpillar can have them on its back ;) He was pretty feisty! He didn't want to let go of my jacket and he was flashing orange everywhere at me. I was worried about ripping him in half just getting him to let go! I had forgotten his underbelly was orange as well until I looked at the other pictures of the species on here and then went 'oh yeah!' so thanks for the help.
