Trichiotinus piger

Trichiotinus piger
Church Creek, Dorchester County, Maryland, USA
June 23, 1984
Size: 12 mm
Identified by Phil Harpootlian. Collected on viburnum flowers. The specimens of piger that I am most used to are larger, more robust, duller, and more reddish brown than the smaller, shinier, and more blackish affinis. Unfortunately, according to Phil, this is not always the rule, and sometimes it can be very hard to separate the two species. In Howden's key, piger has prominent raised shiny longitudinal convex ridges on the elytra that contrast sharply in texture with the densely punctate valleys in between. In affinis, the convex and concave longitudinal zones are not as distinct in height or texture. Personally, I have a very hard time discerning the differences in the elytral intervals that Howden describes in his key to the genus.
