Madrona Marsh Preserve, Torrance, Los Angeles County, California, USA
June 1, 2010
Size: ~~ 7 mm (rough guess)
Found walking on Water Fern (Azolla filiculoides), in vernal pool habitat.

Is this a Muscid Fly ?
Any pointers toward subfamily/genus are much appreciated !

Thanks for confirming Muscoidea & moving it up, John !
Every step helps !

R5's sides are not parallel, and it doesn't "look" like an Anthomyiid, nor like any of BugGuide's Scathophagids or Fanniids.
Hence, I'm leaning toward Muscidae; perhaps Hydrotaea.
Some Hydrotaea have similar field marks, and the generic name seems to hint at an aquatic affiliation; although many species don't seem to have such ties.

Probably Muscidae
The bristles on the thorax suggest Muscidae (dorsocentrals 2+4, acrostichals absent).

Thanks again for your help, John !
It's laudable that you are into difficult taxa like Chironomidae & Muscoidea !
