Steatoda grossa? - Araneus andrewsi

Steatoda grossa? - Araneus andrewsi
San Francisco Bay Area County, California, USA
September 11, 2011
Size: Abdomen is 1.5 cm
I think this is an S. grossa; it was in my back yard on the edge of a wooden play structure. It's quite black, though the inside of the leg joints are red.

Moved from ID Request. I'm afraid your ventral image was not of much use... so I frassed it.

Photo of inside leg joints
I had that photo posted because it showed the red leg joints. I'll repost it if it's useful to anyone.

No help
No, that image doesn't help. Just the comment that the leg joints are red is good enough. I'm not sure Levi even mentions that in any of his descriptions.

Kind of
looks like mites on the legs, anyway.

Araneus sp.
This is a female orb weaver in the genus Araneus. I think it might be A. andrewsi. Compare with

Black?
I agree the abdomen shape looks like it; it certainly has the twin points/humps. But what about the black color? All the A. andrewsi pics I can find are very brown, and usually patterned instead of solid.

Then again, maybe it's Araneus gemma? http://www.sdnhm.org/fieldguide/inverts/aran-gem.html has a pic of a similar one at the top of the page, though mine has no patterns on her legs.

Coloring can vary
That's why I left this at genus level for now. It would take me quite some time and some review reading to place this to species with certainty.... and even then I might not be able to place it.
