large beautiful attracted to light - Opheltes glaucopterus
Bar Harbor, Hancock County, Maine, USA

Size: close to 2"
Could this be a wasp (the abdomen colors)? It seems to rest with its wings outstretched. It came to the porch light after dark. Very active, whirling all over the place.

I'm pretty sure I'm correct in recognizing the "horse-head" cell in the wing veins, which is a diagnostic trait for distinguishing ichneumonids from braconids. If I'm wrong, I hope someone will set me straight.

Ichneumonidae
You're exactly right, Chuck. This is an ichneumonid of some kind.
