Our eleven year old found this while weeding in the mulch bed. Its tail was such a surprise to us. Can anyone help with ID?

Moved
Moved from Katydids.

Katydids such as the
Conocephalinae - Meadow Katydids among others have such long ovipositors. See images in the guide here

Bucrates malivolans.
Nymph of Bucrates malivolans, the "cattail conehead." Shape of the ovipositor (downturned) rules out anything else. Neat find!
