Bald-faced Hornet - Monobia quadridens

Bald-faced Hornet - Monobia quadridens
5 miles north of Marengo, Orange County, Indiana, USA
September 12, 2011
Size: estimated: 2 -- 2.5 cm
seen on a deck over a pond with something in its mouth. although this looks like it could be a bald-faced hornet, compared to pictures here and elsewhere, this one lacks many of the white facial markings and has lesser white markings elsewhere. is this a Dolichovespula maculata, and is it an immature or a drone or what makes the distinctions about facial markings?
