Small green bug ID? - Chinavia hilaris

Small green bug ID? - Chinavia hilaris
Williamson County, Texas, USA
June 4, 2006
Size: 1/2 to 3/4 cm (approx)
This small, flat, bright green bug was crawling rapidly over the thin grass of the "dry woods" (a rocky-soiled rise on our land.) It moved fast enough that it was difficult to gret into focus, and it was definitely headed "somewhere" as it went across the path and into the grass. It did not seem to be looking for something to eat--no exploring, no pauses. I don't recall seeing anything quite like it before. The waxy-shiny bright green color (our vegetation was already drying to duller greens) and the movement caught my eye. In the computer, enlarged, I could see the telltale triangle that indicates it's a true bug of some kind (I think...) but I have no idea where to look to find its relatives.

Moved
Moved from Green Stink Bug.

Family Pentatomidae
is what it reminds me of. It's a nymph of course. The telltale thing to look for is an X on the backs of adults, the upper half of which is formed by the triangular scutellum that you see here.

Thanks...
...I did wonder if it might be an immature...but I had no clue about families. I'll start hunting.

Check out this image
University of Kentucky. I think this is a late instar Acrosternum hilare. Nymphs seem to start out more brightly striped (see guide page) but head towards the green of the adult.

Yes, I think so...
That does look like it to me, too. Thanks!

I've moved it
to the species page.
