I could use some Help - Coenomyia ferruginea - Female
Lakewood, Wisconsin, Wisconsin, USA
June 14, 2006
I found it laying in the grass. It was making a sound from the abdomen. Could anyone help me out?

What the Hell!
I've never seen a fly like this before!

Xylophagidae
This looks very much like Coenomyia ferruginea. And it looks like this specimen just emerged out of its pupa and did not harden completely. Very nice find. I have no idea about the sounds it made, the few times I caught this holarctic species, I could sense a cheese like smell, so in some European countries they are called Cheesfly, but they have nothing to do with cheese....
Cheers

Some kind of fly
You can tell by the one pair of knob-like vestigial wings or halteres that whirl rapidly during flight to provide gyroscopic stability and also play a ganglionic role in contolling the wings based on slight shifts in direction felt by nerves in the halteres.

Thnx
Do you know where I could go to find out what type of fly this is?

Jim
