Pearl Crescent? - Phyciodes tharos - Female

Size: roughly 1"
I thought it was a Pearl Crescent but it seems to have more white in its wings than I would expect.

I believe this is
tharos, based on hind wing pattern and locality. Northern Crescents have not been found this far south in Michigan according to the distribution maps in Douglas & Douglas (2005) "Butterflies of the Great Lakes Region"

Very unusual
Pearl Crescent (Phyciodes tharos) does have a form called marcia. I know it is Indiana, but never heard of it flying in Michigan. This individual has even more white on hindwing border than form marcia does! Very unusual. Sometimes the overall yellow rather than orange ground color is present in the first spring brood. Is the date you posted the same as when the picture was taken?

I took the photo last Tuesday,
June 13. It was at a nature preserve I manage near the shore of Lake Michigan, about 60 miles north of the Indiana State line.
