Some kind of tiger moth I think - Apantesis parthenice

Some kind of tiger moth I think - Apantesis parthenice
Maidens, Hanover County, Virginia, USA
September 17, 2011
Size: about an inch long
This looks closest to the Ornate Tiger Moth listed in my NWF Field Guide, but the guide indicates that its range does not come anywhere near Virginia. The first image is of a live that crawled up my wife's pants, and whose hind wings and abdomen I did not see. The second image is of a dead one I found in a spider web, showing orange and black hind wings and an abdomen that is orange on top and black on the sides and bottom, with yellow stripes on the side.

Parthenice Tiger Moth- yes
The Virgin Tiger Moth and Parthenice Tiger Moth have virtually identical forewings, but one of the large black spots on the hindwing of G. virgo is missing on G. parthenice. Even though the hindwings aren't visible in the picture, the September 17 date is probably enough to call this one parthenice; the Virgin Tiger flies in midsummer while the Parthenice Tiger is most common in the late summer and fall.

Wow
I've only been here a few times but you folks impress me! I think Parthenice has to be the answer. Thanks!

Parthenice?
clearly a tiger moth, grammia, but you are right, based on BugGuides data...it only seems to be on West coast. The Virgin Tiger moth is close as well, but no Virgina sightings listed yet...
Hoping an expert will not distinguishing features, but these are two that at least are geographically closer to you.
