Metallic Blue - Copestylum mexicanum - female

Metallic Blue - Copestylum mexicanum - Female
Lakeland, Polk County, Florida, USA
June 15, 2006
Size: 14 mm
This fly has a pretty metallic violet color in the bright sunshine. This one was buzzing on my butterfly plant. I wanted to catch it for a photo so I clapped my hands together and luckily caught him. I ran into the house hollering for my wife to grab a jar. I chilled her and posed and then photographed. As a side note, this fly is called Mexican Cactus fly yet there are very few cacti in Lakeland. I know of none in my area of town. This is a first sighting for me for this fly.
This fly's first appearance and abdomen made me think of Xylocopa micans see The eyes and antennae told me it was safe to trap in my hands. :)
