Katydid - Metrioptera roeselii - male

Katydid - Metrioptera roeselii - Male
About a mile out of Cottage Grove, on the Glacial Drumlin State Trail, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
June 15, 2006
Looking through BugGuide this looks closest to a Roesel’s Katydid (Metrioptera roeselii), but on those images the markings look more green than white. Also, Dane County, Wisconsin appears to be out of its range (though they do appear to be as close as northern Illinois). It was in a field with tall grasses and many different kinds of wildflowers.

Moved
It has to be Metrioptera roeselii, a species that has been exploding in range. If you look at the range of M. sphagnorum here, it doesn't come close.

Metrioptera nymph.
This is an immature Metrioptera, and it may be a different species than M. roeselii. I can't be sure as I'm not very familiar with the distribution of boreal fauna. Good job with the ID, and a nice image, too.

Metrioptera nymph
Thanks for the help. While I've been enjoying taking photos of insects for several years, it's only been since I've found this wonderful website that I've gotten better at identifying what I'm photographing. Just out of curiosity, what indicates that this is an immature? Is there something in particular I should be looking for?

Lack of wings.
Adults would show wings over the abdomen.

I'm on the west side of Madison and have run across Roesel's on occasion , so their range does extend to here.
