I stand corrected. This is a male Variable Darner (Aeshna interrupta).

Lateral photo?
Do you have any side shots? The shape of the lateral thoracic stripes can be important for ID. I suspect this is a Canada Darner (Aeshna canadensis), but additional photos would help clinch it.
