Crablike Spiny Orbweaver Spider - Gasteracantha cancriformis

Picture was taken with the flash on which made the spider appear more orange. Its back color is more like a tomato red.

spiny orb weaver
We just found this spider, never seen one before. We are in central Texas. We want to keep it in our live insect collection. Any advice? What does it eat? What does it need in it's enviroment? Ours is the red/orange shelled one with black "horns".
Thanks

I have one in my backyard in San Antonio. It is identical except the colors are bright yellow and black. There is no orange or red . I have been mowing around it's area trying not to disturb it for a couple of weeks now and I have noticed 2 neon yellowish green egg sacks at the corner anchors of its web. This is a most interesting spider we have enjoyed watching.

crab-like spider?
We usually have several who make their homes between the bushes on our front porch. I don't let the kids run between the bushes anymore because i love to see the spiders every day. We have yellow and black, orange, and even a slight tint of neon green. Beautiful!
