Harmonia axyridis

Harmonia axyridis
Auburn, Lee County, Alabama, USA
August 10, 2004
I believe this to be a multi-colored Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis) given the black and white markings on the pronotum. I am curious as to the nature of the small yellow rod-like objects on the wing covers and posterior legs. Are these eggs from another species? I noted the same objects on the wing covers of Richard Leung's Harmonia axyridis posted earlier this month.

Great idea, Abigail !
To create a new BugGuide page for fungus infested MALBs.

Could it be........?
could it be parasites....??

Laboulbeniales
These are fungal parasites of the order Laboulbeniales (Fungi, Ascomycota). The species probably is Hesperomyces virescens, one of the few taxa within the order penetrating the integument of their hosts with a haustorium. Haustoria actively make contact with the haemocoel and draw nutrients from it.

Yes, it looks like Laboulbeniales fungi
See for example this BugGuide page.

Pollen?
I assume that's pollen picked up while visiting flowers.

Looks more like sawdust
Isn't pollen round and, typically, more yellow? My guess is wood or chaff of some sort.
