Water Larva - Cybister

Water Larva - Cybister
Atchison, Atchison County, Kansas, USA
September 23, 2011
Size: 3 1/2 inches
Found in a 'river bottoms' area of the Missouri on the Kansas side. We're finally drying out from major flooding and found this nipper in some of the swampy water. THOUGHT it was a Dobsonfly but have never seen a larva that large...so...any ideas? THANX!

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

You were on the right track, Ken. The anterior portion of the head is dentate for Cybister, but smooth for Dytiscus.

I'll have to keep that in mind.
But really, I'm thrilled I got the family right. :)

One more thing
I should add that going strictly by distribution, this is almost certainly Cybister fimbriolatus.

Maybe something
in/near Dytiscus?

Let's see if the experts agree.

Thanx again Ken!
Now running with the lines of a Giant Diving Beetle. Thanx for the heads up again!
