Idylwild Velvet Ant #2 - Dasymutilla bioculata - female

Idylwild Velvet Ant #2 - Dasymutilla bioculata - Female
Idylwild Wildlife Management Area, Caroline County, Maryland, USA
July 15, 2011
At one point in the afternoon during the NE DSA field trip, I ran into two species of velvet ant within a couple of minutes' time, in the same soft, sandy area of trail not far from where we parked. The first was, of course, Dasymutilla occidentalis, the Cow Killer. This was the second. I'm going out on a limb with the ID, I know... I saw another one at the end of the day right next to our car which I think was a third species, will upload that next.
