Hickory Sticky Leaf Spot Midge - Gliaspilota glutinosa

Hickory Sticky Leaf Spot Midge - Gliaspilota glutinosa
Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
September 23, 2011

Moved
Moved from Unidentified Leaf Mines.

Doesn't look anything like the other photo in this section, but this is the more typical form. Note the raised circle/ring in the brownish area. I think I showed you some of these at Wachusett Meadow.

This is by far the latest in the year this species has been found (if that is in fact the larva, which I think it is). Gagne's 2008 hickory paper states that larvae in the northeastern US have all dropped to the soil by mid-June, but I found some on August 2 in western MA this year.

Midge gall (and larva)...
are you sure this was maple and not hickory?

It could be hickory
I know it was along the side of my driveway with oaks, maples, hickory and other trees. I can't remember exactly which tree it came from now.
