Larvae flowing en masse. Are these of the family Sciaridae – Dark-winged Fungus Gnats? Portland (North Deering), Cumberland County, Maine, USA September 23, 2011
They seemed to be protecting the cylindrical white bodies (cocoons?), moving them along with the pack. At one point the larvae stopped moving forward and piled up on top of themselves in a writhing mass, then began flowing forward again. As fascinating as this was to watch, I was at work and had to return to the office, thus didn’t find out where they went. :(
