DSCF8226 - Metacolpodes buchanani
Bay Center 98527 Willapa, Pacific County, Washington, USA
September 26, 2010
Size: Body length ~9mm
Found in the moth light trap.
Locality: Coastal SW Washington State at the edge of Willapa Bay geo:lat=46 37.273 geo:lon=-123 56.814

Epithet should be "buchannani".
Who is the determiner? Can you tell us what external features might separate this one from members of genus Platynus? See comment in American Beetles (2001) Vol 1:p57 regarding the difficulty.

If truly M. buchannani, this could be a new state record for WA. Otherwise, already known in OR and ID. Introduced from southeastern Asia.

Jim Liebherr's opinion:
"I would agree with you* on the M. buchannani. It's interesting that they've spread all over Hawaii, but seem not to be moving out across the western US (yet). In Hawaii they hopped on planes, flying to the airport lights and getting into cargo, then on to the next island. I suppose back in the 1940's when they were first picked up in Oregon, they came across on military transports?"
