Largish Red Velvet Mite - Callidosoma

Largish Red Velvet Mite - Callidosoma
Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
September 27, 2011
Size: body 4mm
I spotted this unusually large red mite near my door handle on 9/23 and captured it to photograph. It wouldn't stop walking, so I left it in its container, checking occasionally to see if it had tired yet. Walking... walking...walking... Finally this morning I looked in and it was still, so I got these shots of it. Before I was able to take a side shot, it started walking again so I gave up and released it back outside, feeling a bit bad for its days of captivity.

I do have shots of the underside from when it flipped over, and I'll add one of those once I've processed one.
