Robber Flies - Laphria thoracica - Laphria thoracica - Male Female
Capron, Boone County, Illinois, USA

There seem to be a great many of these insects about this year (2006). My identification as Laphria thoracica is based upon other entries in this guide but I'm not entirely sure.

It seems to me a good charact
It seems to me a good character for L. thoracica is the yellow on the thorax coming down in front of the wings

We're just trying to learn these ourselves
but thought that L. thoracica had an all-black abdomen. Nothing factual in that, just the musings of two struggling amateurs!

Very nice
Bullington comments that in various places in the range thoracica's abdomen ranges from all black to all yellow. The orangish hair on the legs and the very black mystax (facial hair) help define this otherwise very variable species. He also states some of these forms may be undescribed species. So I think this is the thoracica with the yellow haired abdominal segments up front.
