caterpillar - Hypercompe scribonia

caterpillar - Hypercompe scribonia
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
September 28, 2011
This rather large caterpillar (~25mm across rolled up) was found under some milkweed stalks which I had temporarily put in a heap prior to removing the seed pods. Not certain that it was on the milkweed since the stalks had been on the ground for several days and there were also other caterpillars which had decided to shelter under the stalks. It has been cold and rainy for a few days.
